Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a word is defined as five characters including spaces. Most people type between forty and sixty words per minute with reasonable accuracy.
About the Typing Speed Test
Typing speed is measured in WPM (words per minute), where one "word" is defined as 5 characters — including spaces. This standardization lets you compare speeds across different passages regardless of word length. Accuracy is tracked separately as the percentage of correctly typed characters.
How WPM is calculated
WPM = (Correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes elapsed
Accuracy = Correct keystrokes ÷ Total keystrokes × 100
Average speeds by skill level
- 🐢Below 40 WPM — Hunt-and-peck. Learning proper finger placement is the highest-leverage improvement.
- 🚶40–70 WPM — Average typist. Good enough for most jobs; accuracy is usually the limiter here.
- 🏃70–100 WPM — Proficient. You can type roughly as fast as you think for most writing tasks.
- ⚡100+ WPM — Expert. Typical of power users, transcriptionists, and competitive typists.
How to improve
Focus on accuracy before speed — muscle memory of correct finger positions is the foundation. Practice consistently for 10–15 minutes a day. Increasing difficulty level forces you to type less-common words and complex vocabulary, which builds broader muscle memory faster.
